DAMAGE DONE Efforts were taken to salvage any intact slate, but unfortunately, due to the extreme deteriorated condition of the slate, very few were able to be saved. “It was cold and very early in the morning,” says Mike Kamis, produc-tion manager of Absolute. “It was also pitch black out, so extreme caution was utilized by my men while staging this project. It couldn’t have gone better though, which is a true testament to the skills of our men.” The slate roof was first removed and hauled to on-site refuse dumpsters. Efforts were taken to salvage any intact slate, but unfortunately, due to the extreme deterio-rated condition of the slate, very few were able to be saved. Then, the roof deck, which consisted of two-inch by four-foot pine battens, was carefully removed and replaced with solid wood decking. An abundance of timber frame repairs was performed by experienced craftsmen. A vapor barrier was then placed onto the bare roof deck for further protection from the elements. The slates were installed in the con-figuration in which they were previously installed and fastened using special stainless steel nails for strength and durability. Special attention was paid to the date (1883) on the roof, which was achieved by using different color slates in a carefully laid out configuration that was approved by the architect. Custom flashings were fabricated and installed at the peaks and gutter edges. Specialty aluminum was chosen for its durability and affordability, plus its ease or workability. Finishing touches performed were the installation of an extra thick, half-round gutter with specialty hangers and round downspouts. With the cooperation of the City of Green staff, the various government agencies, product manufacturers, the lead supplier (Willoughby Supply) and the timber framers, the project was completed in an extremely efficient manner. “The Levi J. Hartong Barn is an extremely important asset to the commu-nity and I am very proud of our project, the skills of our employees and the way our people performed beyond expecta-tions with all of the other professionals involved,” Kamis says. Absolute Roofing and Construction staff were proud to receive the “Contractor of the Year” award for commercial spe-cialty work at the annual NARI Evening of Excellence award banquet earlier this year for their expert craftsmanship employed for this project.
