Promoting Productivity Oatey Customer Support Center adopts open office plan, facilitates collaboration By Doug Bardwell | Photos by Robert Marrott B ack in 2012, department heads needed to preplan meetings, put on their coats and possibly drive to another building to discuss engineering issues or product launches. With the opening of the new Oatey Customer Support Center on 7.65 acres at 20600 Emerald Parkway in Cleveland, that’s all just a memory for its 135 associates. The new, two-story, 47,000-square-foot building consolidates marketing, sales, customer service, finance, engineering, R&D and management, all within just seconds of each other. The building’s open plan enables convenient collisions among personnel from all departments which fosters interaction and coopera-tion on projects. a manufacturing plant on Berea Road. Within four years, Oatey began manu-facturing solvent cements for plumbers. Now, selling millions of cans of plumb-ing solvents each year, Oatey is the world’s largest producer of this staple for the plumbing trade. In 1958, a hardware DIY division was begun, and by 1959, a larger facility was needed and the company opened its Defining success for 100 years Starting in 1916, company founder Lee Roy Oatey began selling a single product, never imagining that a century later his inventory would boast more than 6,000 SKU’s. It all began with manufactured lead roof flashing. During World War II, Oatey sup-ported the war effort by drilling aircraft bolts.
